Looking After Your Bra

A bra is a surprisingly complex item of clothing, designed to support your breasts and give your body shape.

You should replace bras every six to eight months, but the better care you take of your bras, the longer they will last and the better they will look and work.

Regular wearing, machine washing and particularly tumble drying will all cause the bra to lose its elasticity and support. So the message is clear if you want to get the best value out of your bras. Look after them and they will look after you.

Washing

Washing instructions vary depending on the materials used and the advice on the label should always be followed.

Some manufacturers recommend hand wash only - for example if you wash a moulded t-shirt bra in a washing machine you could damage the foam that gives it its shape.

To hand wash your bra, fill a bowl with cold water and gentle detergent (shampoo or hand soap also works). Rub it gently to clean it (be careful not to snag the threads of delicate materials such as satin, silk or lace) and rinse through to remove any sweat. If you soak the bra, do not soak it for longer than half an hour.

Rinse the bra thoroughly to remove any detergent.

If using a washing machine set your machine on the delicate cycle at a cool temperature and use a detergent meant for delicates.

All bras should be washed in a special washing machine bag. Lost underwires are an extremely common cause of damage to washing machines. A padded bra wash bag not only protects the bras, but also prevents the bra hooks snagging other garments in the wash.

One little thought. If you are thinking of boiling a white bra to make it look white, maybe it's time to buy a new one!

Drying

You should never dry your bra in a tumble dryer. The dryer could actually shrink your bra, cause wrinkles in the cup of a padded bra and will ruin the elasticity of the material and shorten its life considerably.

Direct sunlight may also dessicate the elastic and could fade the bras colour.

Ideally, after washing, they should be hung on a clothes line or drying rack to air dry.

Wearing

Ideally, a bra should not be worn two days in a row. Alternating allows the elastic to recover in between wears and will lengthen the life span of your bra.

Storing

Most lingerie drawers are a tangle of material, but storing your underwear properly will help keep it looking good for longer.

Moulded cup bras in particular, such as t-shirt bras, should be stored carefully to avoid denting the cup shape. You can either arrange them so that the cups stack one into the other or fold the individual bra in half and put one cup inside the other.
